It's not a "bad" diet. If you are obese, and need open-heart surgery, there is a tremendous amount of benefit to the Atikins diet.
Instead of the diet, buy your wife an iPod and an elleptical machine. Call it an early Christmas present. Load up the iPod with music, and take 20 minute turns on the machine as often as you can. If you want to make things more interesting, *you* work out on the machine a couple times a day.....
