I think that, in addition to single-player missions, there should be "observation" missions which let you experience the battles and engagements of the Pacific (Midway, for example) without having to go there in your Career.

Either make it single-player missions with the player's sub starting near the events, or invent some "observation mode" where you just have a free-flying camera and the "</> camera" (and possibly some other features) and can just sit there and watch the fight play out. Would be nice to have as a "rolling demo" at presentations, too, if implemented correctly.

DEFINETLY!

That was my biggest gripe with the Silent Hunter III missions, besides from the lack of historical information (at least the descriptions were very well-written). Missions can be far more than just setting up an attack and that's it. When I make missions, I try to make them open-ended, dynamic, and challenging, and with a detailed briefing including friendly units, known and expected enemy units, known and expected hazards (sunken ships, mine-fields, etc.), weather conditions, and so on.

Empires: Dawn of the Modern World, while an RTS, not a sub simulator, is a textbook example of how single-player missions should be done.
