We just about did that to the kiwi. Now there main enemy is predators. I always thought the buffalo was a protected species in the USA. |
It is
now, but the population hasn't even
near recovered from the buffalo killings of the 1870s and 80s. Once the white man came to the West, in the early 1800s, the Buffalo were destined for near mass extinction. The pre-1800 population was somewhere in the two-digit millions. When the US Army tried to kill off the Buffalo to starve the Indians, the number fell into the hundreds. They have now brought the population up to somewhere in the 4,000s.
