That pretty much sums it up espically the "after 1940" part.

Yea its a LOOOOONG way around but war is hell. Its alot better than blundering into a mine.

You should be okay on fuel as long as you keep it down to ahead 1/3. Submerging occasionally will help extend the range a bit as well.

I know that its up for debate but in my experience its true.
