The torpedoes in the game are different from real torpedoes but the essentials are there. The torpedoes in the game are quite smart, developing a better picture of what's around them than most people can with their sonar. Just because you can't SEE it on your screen, doesn't mean it isn't happening. Also, as I've said before, they have an extrodinarily high search rate. What more do you want from a torpedo, really? The rest is bells and whistles.
I mean... yeah... I wish all my shoes were Prada but sometimes the cute ones from Payless look just as good.
Given that, I'd argue the best tactic is to develop just enough of a picture to make sure the target is in range, and let 'er rip. The torpedo can do the rest.
