Technically they were already capable of deeper depths. They were just guessing wrong and adjusted there settings accordingly.
Even then it was still a guessing game a bit like rolling dice you might get lucky now and then.
When the hedgehog and "squids" using contact fusing that all changed. The kill ratio increased by nearly 60%.
