I did some investigating while writing the mission, to find out just what sort of defenses did exist in NY harbour, and it seems that in January of 1942, precious little. It amounted to something like; 1 submarine net across the Verazzona Narows, 2 small minefields, 1 armed trawler protecting the harbour entrance and 1 small coastal gun. Defenses were of course quickly improved by mid 1942 with magnetic detection systems and hydrophones being put in place.
