Setting to sys managed is a good way to check if the size is really the problem. After that you could always try to find the optimum for your system.
I personally think performance gain from a fixed size for the vir mem is over rated a lot. My system shows no differences during benchmarking at all. I DO get a better performance by putting the vir mem in a dedicated partition on a different disk then where the actual operating system is installed.
