You killed three destroyers? Normally, there seems to be about 5, and I think I've seen 7. Even if you hadn't been killed by whatever, I'd still think if you were on the surface you'd still be detected by the remaining destroyers and thoroughly pwned.
EDIT: and on the eastern approach - I remember when I tried to sneak into Scapa w/the stock game and being rather annoyed that the east approach wasn't available. I'd read Churchill's
The Gathering Storm, and remembered seeing a map of where it was. Churchill went on at length about the barriers he put down. I was under the impression he was pissed off about the Royal Oak episode.
Btw - has the wreckage of the U-47 ever been located? I guess I'll look that up on uboat.net.
