I had similar fun today. Three-quarters of the way through the Strait on batteries. Calm sea, gibbous moon. Peeked around before surfacing to refresh air (batteries weren't a problem; you can go a lo-ooooong way running at 1 kt) only to get spotted by an Elco.
Ten minutes later had 15 Elco boats and three destroyers looking for me, and I
still needed fresh air. I managed to creep along the north coast of Africa and back out to the Atlantic, but I don't think I could have done that '43 onwards.
Made for an exciting lil time, yes yes.
