I might add, that Bernard is a very very typical English name - which is why I think it became the brunt of a lot of German sub humor.

Sort of the same thing, I believe, with Jerry-Rigging and Jerry jokes on that little island in the Atlantic.

If you find a German named Bernard, there is an unfortunate fellow indeed, you probably won't see one on a sub. You probably won't find too many londoners named Fritz either, or none that will admit it.
