You need to plan your attack so you are ahead of the ships route and waiting
Try to plot his course so you know his direction and speed
Try to outflank on the surface keeping your self at a good distance away just within your contact range
Night attacks are best if you can as early war you own the night and can get a lot closer than the day and before radar

You will eat juice at flank submerged over long distances and to be honest you must be fair distance away to notice so much power use
