It depends however, with surface ships, stealth isn't their strong point, so the plusses and minuses of using active sonar aren't the same as for submarines. The other advantage is that they're typically faster than submarines, so you can outrun them if you have to. Submarines have to get close (within about 10Nmi) to use a torpedo, and the one thing you DO NOT want them to do is get close. For that reason I almost always leave the hull sonar on active if there's a submarine threat anticipated.
I do use passive sonar, just not the hull array. The towed array often provides longer ranged detections than the hull sonar too.
I guess the real trick of running the FFG effectively is being able to keep an eye on all your sensors simultaneously.
