I hate to be a history nazi, but anywhen... The one time they tried to use the
Argonaut (which was similar to
Narwhal and
Nautilus) as a regular fleet submarine, it promptly got it's ass handed back to itself during a convoy attack by a trio of Japanese destroyers, which was the worst single loss of life (105 men) on a US submarine during the war.
