Ex-General attacks Trump: 'A catastrophic mistake'

US President Donald Trump is no longer demanding a ceasefire from Russia, and he is no longer threatening sanctions against the country.

And that U-turn is a fatal mistake.
That's what Ben Hodges, who was general and commander of US troops in Europe from 2014 to 2017, thinks.

According to Hodges, with his new tactics, the US president is turning his back on Ukraine, and thus on Europe.

He told the media:

"After all the loud talk about being able to stop the war in 24 hours, I think the credibility of this president and this administration will be seriously damaged by this failure."

Because the US is not supporting Ukraine out of 'charity', says the former general.

"It's about protecting US strategic interests. Our economy, our prosperity is directly linked to the prosperity of Europe," he says.

Hodges believes that it is an expression of a very superficial understanding when Trump increasingly signals: 'not our soldiers, not our war.'

“It would be a catastrophic mistake to turn away from Europe. The United States cannot do everything alone, even with its gigantic defense budget. We need allies, and our best and most reliable allies come from Europe, Canada and Australia,” he says, adding:

“If the United States turns away and says, ‘Hey, Europe, this is your problem,’ I think that would be a great betrayal of our allies who have stood by us for decades.”
