Wether its an act of sabotage made by an enemy intel onboard or a graphics bug it's up to you to decide.

my recommendation: when you detect an airborne enemy, dive the boat.

even if you shoot one down, you will be inundated with additional aircraft until one of them sinks your boat and sends your valiant crew to Davy Jones' Locker.

Dive the boat. observe through one of your scopes. surface when the a/c passes.
