A friend of mine tested if you could charge faster than what the gauge could show. according to him you were not charging faster than 1.8kA. So with that in mind, I would say that getting the battery current at 1.8kA or as high as possible when charging is more relevant as a "bar" than using the motor current as the "bar".
Remember to still deliver the ordered RPM on the shaft while still providing as high battery current as possible.
If you decide to charge at your own initiative (while still never of course going against the ordered speed on the EOT: Half, slow, dead slow or stopped
nor should your initiative to charge have any other negative impact on operation) you do not need to worry about maxing the recharge rate as captain never ordered a charge in the firs place.
