I remember doing a mission during night. heavy fog. So very low visibility on the surface. I came across a Flower corvette, it was chasing me and fired at me. But i could outrun him at full speed. (max speed of a uboat is faster then the corvette)

Because of the night and heavy fog, he sometimes lost me, even at close range. Suddenly i got damaged. I had automatically the instinct to dive
It was a bad idea. Because my speed was slower, and i actually become visible for the Flower Corvette,
because he was using the hydrophones and also pinging me on sonar

Staying surfaced during the night or heavy fog, is sometimes better then diving.

I played a couple of sub simulators. And people (even myself) always think ''we are a submarine, we MUST dive'' but thats not true.
Even during convoy attacks, its sometimes better to stay surfaced at long range. Being surfaced makes you more aware of the surroudings. And having fast maneuvering speed is a big advantage. You can really fire a couple of torpedoes long range. And go full speed away from the convoy. Then return back, fire some more...

Diving is the last option. I only dive for routine hydro checks (searching a convoy) escape detection if i have no other choice. Or when i want to make a inside convoy attack (getting in the middle of the convoy, between the ships) Sometimes its nice to submerge to get as close to the convoy, to recognize the ships. When i have time. I get in the convoy submerged. And explore all the ships for good targets.

A uboat during WW2, wasn't really a submarine as we know today. It was basically a torpedo boat that could dive. The type XXI uboat was a real submarine. Because it could operate for a long period of time under water.
