well im not sure if you already do this but this is how i get the most out of my fuel.
first plot the course to your patrol zone. then bring speed to Ahead Slow. Then ask your nav officer how far you can go at that speed. he will tell you a number. then ask him how long till you reach the end of your course. and he will give you another number. at ahead slow you should be able to make it almost ANYWHERE without even comming close to running out of fuel. to even further your fuel conservation, travel during the daylight underwater. at ahead slow. you can go almost all 18 hours without having to surface. just grab some oxygen when you start running out. at night surface and use the diesel engines. that saves fuel.
also when you ask you nav officer how far you can go/how long till end of course. factor in the numbers and see if you can increase your speed a little bit. ill give you an example so this makes sense
im traveling at ahead slow. i ask nav officer how far i can go at this rate. he tells me "we can go 86,000 kilometers" then i ask him ok how long is our course? he says "our course is 20,000 kilometers" so i think hmmm well i need about 40,000km total to get there and back. lets round up for the 24 hour patrol and any chasing that i need to do (increased speed chasing) lets say all in all at this speed i can do about 50,000. that leaves me with alot of fuel left over. that means if i stayed at ahead slow id end up back at base with about 36,000km worth of juice. so with that knowledge. you could actually travel faster. find the nice balance that gives you a good amount of speed. gives you enough fuel just in case. and your set.
i apologize if you already do this hahah. but this is what i do and ive never really had a fuel problem. its all about your speed.
