That's the problem of most of DW scenarios, Sub pop up at knife fight range. And many of the scenarios don't have a layer.

Regarding the shadow zone / detection range. my experience says they layer in DW will protect you from active sonar ping until 8-10nm distance. Passive sonar signature will penetrate layer at about 3-4nm distance.
