re Dargo: yes lithium mining needs lots of water and has a drastic impact on regions where it is done.
However during drilling, the "mud" being used for cooling, greasing and lift the cuttings can contain dissolved lithium from deeper horizons, which can then be extracted without much hazzle.
This would be especially useful in geothermal wells with its giant circulation systems, and it is currently being researched:
