Dont feel bad, i had that exact same situation, up just north of Ireland. Little flower corvette was coming right at me at 15 knots. I fired a torpedo that just barely missed so i dove. Didnt get more then 15-20 m down before depth charges were going off. 3 compartments flooded and my batteries destroyed. Even blowing my ballast didnt get me to the surface.
