You must remember that communication wasn't as good between sub's as other ships. The sub captains were always on the look out for a big ship to sink so if there were a couple of U-boats out there they would offen gun for the same target.

This also happened with US boats in the first mini-wolfpacks they used. Better communication and pre-planning helped reduce cases latter on.
