There will sometimes be mention of "establish patrol area 50nm across" or "do not enter 100 fathom line", etc. which generally means to stay in the deeper water. You wouldn't want to have to burn all your order, papers and charts if you get sunk in the shallows...
- so unless it specifically mentions getting close in to shore, stay toward the deeper water.
