I thought the same thing...then all of a sudden around September of '43 things started getting a lot tougher. Air craft hounding me (once they spot you they keep sending more patrols your way), they start utilizing the extended patrol range so there really is no safe place. I get driven under two or three times a day. Destroyers are starting to get smart and though I can get away the majority of times, more and more often they do find me and I have to go evasive for a couple hours as I get dc'd. Believe me your life as a captain is about to get tougher. I do not use NYGM or GW (yet). I have about 20 individual mods including Improved Convoys (I love that mod). I am currently in Oct. '43....so if you are in early or mid '43...have patience...it happens rather suddenly.
P.S. If your base in the bay of biscay...it also turns nasty with Allied destroyers patroling the area and air patrols coming at you all the way to base or as you are just leaving (Up until sept., the bay was a safe zone...I never saw enemy aircraft or destroyers/escorts. As an example to start my last mission in October, I ran into an air patrol about 50km outside of st. naz. and a HK group (single file of 6 black swans) about 150-200km outside st. naz).
