Like life it's all about compromise. You can either go faster and get attacked without warning or you can play closer to real time and still have the game move at a reasonable pace.
In mid Atlantic 1024 is fine until about Nov 43 when the "air gap" gets closed over. There is also the bugbear of escort carriers which will bring out air attacks as well. The closer to enemy land you get the more likely it is you'll get buzzed and the slower you'll end up having to play because the more air attacks are going to come your way.
This is fairly historical with the Bay of Biscay becoming a hunting ground for the RAF Coastal Command and the orders from BdU in late 1942 to stay submereged until well clear of the continental shelf.
Either that or only play 1939 so you don't get so many air attacks.
