Japan probably had the best and most reliable torpedoes of World War 2. Unfortunately for them, their doctine of using submarines almost exclusively against heavily-screened warships meant this advantage was largely thrown away. However, on a few occasions it paid big dividends, such as the sinking of the US carrier
Wasp.
Another advantage some Japanese surface ships equipped with the Long Lance had was the unique ability to reload tubes.
