i am sure that this was a valuable lesson from which you will learn and not repeat.

I finally finished this patrol. I had been playing a couple of patrols on a different mod on another installation of SH4.
Found a couple of lone merchants to sink, then ran into a nice convoy. I did a save right after detecting the convoy which proved to be a very good idea. As I then messed up my first 2 approaches to the convoy. On the third try I slipped in between the front escort and the right side (starboard!) escort without getting detected, coming to periscope depth in the right place. I shot 2 torpedoes at each of 3 merchants, hitting all of them. Since no destroyers were bearing down on me yet, I also got off a stern tube shot at another ship before going deep and working my way out of the area. I believe I got credit for 2 of the ships sunk. I had a patrol objective to complete back in the Celebes Sea. While completing that I encountered 2 different solo ships, both were medium tankers. Both were easy targets, adding 10,000 tons to my success. Then returned back to Pearl Harbor to complete patrol.
I got no penalty at all. And for sinking 30,000 tons of merchants I got a medal for me and several of the crew.

But the only upgrade I could make to the sub was to add the air search radar. Wish I could get the 4" deck gun. That 3-inch peashooter is almost useless.
But I definitely love the Gato sub
