There were several discussions here on this forum (you may find them with the search function).
The "real" shadows (don't confuse with the ambiant light which simulates shadow in conjunction with direct sun light) have been deactivated by the devs, probably because they don't work correctly. So, all SHD nodes are useless and could be deleted in any file (and this can save a lot of memory).
