Yes, it's possible to alter the number of torpedoes your boat holds. It's a little bit buggy even at the best of times, and it's *really* buggy if you do a half-arsed job of it.

You've got to change the amounts in the basic.cfg file. Look down through there, and you'll see stuff like "ForeInternalRes109=1". Add internal reserves and external reserves. However, if you add too many, the boat's configuration file doesn't know how to deal with them, and you'll get the same problems the IX-D2 has.

Which is why you also have to alter the boat file in the \submarine folder. I've never done this, so I can't give you any specifics. I'm not even sure if it's a text file you have to edit, or if it's a binary. In your type 9b, you're pretty safe in adding 5 to your internals and 3 to your externals just by editing the basic.cfg, but anything more than that and you're going to have to get more involved.

As a workaround to fiddling with this issue, you can look up my "cheats" thread and use the torpedo power-booster from that. This just guarantees one kill per torpedo. It's not the same as being able to fire a spread at each ship because you've got so many spares, but you can always give yourself the Z2 "homing" torpedoes which can lock onto boats traveling at 6kts and just use that instead of a spread.
