Yeah, most messages do not show as transparent windows. You have to hit 'm' to get to the radio message log.
And as a side note: If you think the navigation tutorial is hard, just wait 'til you try the torpedo tutorial. It's a monster

I seem to recall I do. I get the "you passed the test"-message, too. Strange.
PS: Did you try to dive and accidentally run your sub into the bottom? I did, and when my brother and friends tried the game, they did it too.
