Someone named the firing method you speak of after Richard H. O Kane.
Rear Admiral Richard H. "Dick" O Kane was a WW II US submarine commander and Medal of Honor Recipient . Possibly the best actually terms of tonnage sunk by a single commander. O Kane was Executive Officer on the legendary WAHOO and then Commanded the legendary TANG, rated as top boat in tonnage sunk. O Kane was a POW for nearly a year and barely survived.

Also, his books "CLEAR THE BRIDGE!" (About his time on TANG) and "WAHOO! " (about the USS WAHOO) are excellent reads.
