“Pirate” ship Gasparilla sails in Tampa for the Gasparilla Pirate Festival.
The Washington Naval Treaty is signed, limiting the navies of the UK, US, France, Italy, and Japan.
The Soviet secret-police Cheka, led by Felix Dzerzhinsky (pictured), is dissolved and replaced by the State Political Directorate. Estimates of the number of victims killed by the Cheka vary, ranging from 28,000 to 500,000
Ship Losses:
Luso (Portugal) The cargo ship caught fire at Lisbon. She was scuttled on 10 February.
