The Type II learns the Kaleun on how to be restrained using his available torpedos. It is very small, therefore agile; an ideal u-boat for a harbour raid.
The Type II IMHO suffers less damage from depth charges; the blast "pushes" the u-boat rather than damages it at least from a medium distance, since is has less mass than the bigger u-boats.
I think that the crush depth of the Type II is around 130 m. Certainly not 4...
The only con I see is the low surface speed.
I always start my careers with a Type IIA and after 1-2 mission IID and keep it at least for 6-8 more missions.
