Jonancy ( United States) off Montauk Point, Long Island, New York, in dense fog on 18 September during a voyage from Norfolk, Virginia, to Boston, Massachusetts, the 5,054-gross register ton cargo ship was beached on Long Island 1 mile (1.6 km) north of Montauk Point and 1 nautical mile (1.9 km; 1.2 mi) off shore. Her wreck settled in 40 feet (12 m) of water, and she was declared a total loss. Her crew of 42 survived and was rescued by
