Yeah, the S class subs in the U.S. fleet, shared the distinction of having their sonar gear topside... it's that crazy looking disco ball object, just before the deck gun...
As I recall, it was a shared distinction along with the Uboats, on all of them, I believe... the only particular sub/s in the Uboats I'm not 100% sure of, would be the Type XXI & Type XXIII... have included a link for the different uboats (including those actually built & used, as well as others that were developed, had some built but not used & others that were planned on but never went any further.

With it locate top side.. it isn't gonna detect jack, not unless & until your sub is submerged... just the way of it...
