Ship Losses:
Alaska (United States) The passenger ship ran aground on Blunts Reef, 40 nautical miles (74 km) south of Eureka, California, and sank with the loss of 48, or 31 passengers and 11 crew, of the 214 people on board. Some of the survivors were rescued by Anyox ( United Kingdom).
