So now if I want to make a change to those .mis files, say edit a probability of a certain group (some 42a_jap_merchants [or how they are called]) to appear or if I want to change the unit types that are spawned, do I have to restart a career for the changes to take effect or are those .mis files loaded "freshly" each time I continue a saved game?

Side note: I am using TMO.
you can modify .mis files while you are in port, between missions.
keep copies of the TMO-files and be very careful what you change.
i am not yelling at you....merely sharing past experiences doing the same thing.

think about doing this type of change via a mini-mod that you can apply and un-apply if things go south on you.
good luck!
