I added that convoy to TMO campaign so player can try to pull it off. Convoy is on historical, route, timing, composition etc (as much as possible in the sim) with the ability to operate on the surface now in TMO at night like that now, quite interesting.
If I recall, he mentioned Formosa so first or second patrol. In order to evade escorts after an attack they tricked the escorts by going into the shallows. The escorts thought they would go to deep water after the attack to escape and so went to the deeper water looking for them, but didn't find them.
