If you're leery of the untried UPS you could always test it out first by running a few lamps (with about 3-400W total) and an alarm clock off it for a couple days. The lamps will put a load on it while the alarm clock (use a digital one with no battery backup in it), will let you know if the UPS is delivering continuous power or not. Also during this testing period you can simulate a couple power failures by pulling the plug and seeing how long it takes to drain the power completely before charging it back up again. Its good practice to completely drain an UPS every 6 months or so anyway to maximize battery life.
