Speaking of transfers, from the bit of research and information I could find, at the end of each patrol the captain was responsible for assigning some of his crew off the boat (via promotion and transfer to a school, or promotion onto another boat, and so on). Some captains didn't do this, but it eventually came around to bite them in the end where they may lose half their crew when BdU finally caught up with him.

In general, I find that one-sixth of the crew should leave after each patrol. So I turned off the feature in SH3 Commander and now roll d6 for each crewman. If I roll a 1 I dismiss that crewman. I do something different for IWO and IIWO, where after half a dozen patrols I will generally dismiss the IWO then bump the IIWO up to IWO and bring in a new IIWO.

It works pretty well except that in real life for every guy you dismissed you would get a replacement that was not necessarily inexperienced. You might lose a guy with 6 patrols under his belt but you might get a replacement that had 4 patrols, or 8! Currently you can't do that in SH3 Commander, so I'm penalizing myself a little too much now. With 2.6 if you can bring in new crew with prior experience, then it should work pretty well with my 1d6 method.
