Plus, the one size fits all skill level setting effects other things such as gunnery, and especially visual sensors as well as behavior. One example would be escorts will charge in at a submerged submarine in a straight line and set themselves up perfectly for a down the throat shot which nearly always works even with steam torpedoes when set to competent or below. Veteran and Elite close in but typically zig zag until at about not making themselves such easy targets.

Have found even an escort set to Elite using early war sonar say the Type93-1A (Active Sonar) and Type93-1P(Passive) can not track/attack you same way one with mid war Type93-3A and 3P. With the 1A and 1P, went to 250=275 feet feet or so and would usually lose contact and if there was any waves, lol they were done. With escorts set to elite in early found, it was nearly impossible (especially when playing without contacts on) to visually track and end around a target, the escort had hawkeye vision, it got bloody unrealistic. Once a while a really skilled watch crew, sure, but every escort like that? no. I fooled around with adjusting the different equipment, the sim.cfg in conjunction but still were weak. The tinkering was quite time consuming and not gain desired effect or having competent but not allied style escorts, in early war. Otherwise, even in TMO 1941-September of 1943 was not challenging and grew boring, even at 100 realism because basically attacked with impunity. Attacking and not being pursued in this sim, is anti-climatic and patrol can grow stale. I have striven to prevent this in TMO and pretty much succeeded from my testing.

Thus, I changed the early way escort's sonar equipage to the 3A and 3P and set to veteran provides what was aiming for. Around September-October 1943 fleet destroyers escorts began to switch to the 5A and 5P which makes them much more effective but again it is appropriate for the time period, japanese did improve their ASW at this point.

Thing is in 1945, seem to not improve even more and with advent of decoys and running deep diving boats such as Balaos and even Tench and am wondering if the Type-3A and 3P would be the next step. Seems I remember it was but I forgot and thought would ask to try and save myself the time.
sensors.cfg is NOT veteran vs elite.
it is the settings for sensitivity of the sonar and its operators.
but, ok, if you want to start jockeying sonar sets in/out of escort models, be.my.guest.
