actually, we lost quite a few boats to mines.
the prevailing wisdom, after the war (JANAC), was that if the enemy could not confirm anti-submarine activities in the vicinity of a patrol-loss, the suspected cause was mines. At least eight of fifty-two, possibly more. so many unknowns.
