Something to consider: in order for the mast height from the Recognition Manual to be fed into the stadimeter, you have to have the periscope on a target. That wasn't immediately intuitive. If you don't do this, you just get a default mast height value (50 feet, I believe) without any warnings.



The advice to turn off duds for practice is sound. With dud torpedoes, I've had whole salvos pass right under the ship without exploding. It seems the Mk 14's unreliability is historically accurate and doesn't pull any punches in how bad they were. Half the time, the torpedoes will just miss altogether or fail to explode (the Mk 10's on the S-Class subs are very good, on the other hand).
