I just can't agree with the idea this manner of dress for women should be permitted in today's western society. Banning those face coverings is not xenophobic. Any muslim scholar I think will tell you the koran's guidance on dressing 'modestly' is subject to interpretation, one need only look at the various ways muslim women dress. The banning of those face coverings should simply be looked at as western societies interpretation of modesty. Here society says you can dress modestly without having some religious interpretation demand you wear a potato sack over your head or be blamed and brutally beaten because someone else happened to look at your face. Maybe the 1st generation of immigrant women and especially the men who demand these burdens may find it difficult to adapt. But the next generation especially the women will very likely greatly appreciate the freedom from religious oppression.

This isn't about being anti-muslim or anti-religion or xenophobic, you want to worship your god, baa baa ack, chutlulu, or your pet rock, go for it. But its also perfectly fine for western society to define modesty and we dont treat women like cattle here. What I find really heartbreaking is that even in this present day and age we're still having to enact laws to protect women from religious fanaticism and barbaric cave man ways of thought.
