Yes, many many people have thought about it, and discussed it here and on the SHIII and SHIV boards. No one has a perfect answer yet, but several have tried different ideas, none of which are perfect but we keep trying.
Wulfmann, you can either turn 'Map Contact Updates' off in the Options screen when loading the game, or use the Assisted Plotting Mod
