Well Kapitan, I tried out some Murmansk convoy raiding in December 1942. My ace kaleun got sent back to training duties, so I continued the career with a new one.
This definitely is a new playstyle for me. Spent a LOT of time hunting and dodging aircraft, very little ever seeing anything. The radar detector has to be the best tool ever cause I would surely be dead without it.
I managed to hit two freighters in a convoy heading to Reyjavik, Iceland, but failed to find any other merchant contacts. A small 2DD task force swung by a few days later and since they were right in my path, I managed to torp one. The other missed, but he didn't turn around.
Trip home was more exciting; ran into a Hunter Killer Group of five DDs, one escort carrier Bogue Class. Heading directly at me (possibly picked up my radio signal)
I couldn't resist the danger.. Four torps into the escort carrer at 950m. Sank in about three minutes. First one I've ever killed, 15k GRT. And I survived five ships trying to depth charge me!
And judging by your post, I'm not the only one who's been torping aircraft carriers
