I think a lot of these oddball US products became popular during the reconstruction period of the 50's and 60's.
Vending machine culture in Japan was a trip. You could buy a 2 liter "beer torpedo"* of Asahi Dry because..well, why not?
*- Imagine a typical 1 liter plastic soda bottle. Now make it twice as tall and change the plastic to aluminum and fill it with beer.
