We have Fatburger down here in SoCal, but the true LA burger is The Original Tommy's, which started as a small burger shack back in 1946, a year before Fatburger was also launched in LA in 1947:

Tommy's is so popular and iconic, there are actual "counterfeit Tommy's" burger stands that pop up from time to time, making the Original Tommy's have to retain lawyers to shut down the imposters. I spent two years in a high school just down the street from the Original Original Tommy's stand on Beverly Blvd and they used to reward outstanding students with free burgers. (I never got one...). The Beverly Blvd original stand is such a landmark that people swear the burgers from that location are way better than those at any of the other Original Tommy's official locations; it is still just a little stand, with a minimalist annex facility located just paces away; there are no chairs or tables, just counters, so you either have to eat standing up or in your car; the Beverly site has always been open 24/7/365 and the clientele ranges from school kids, business executives, gangbangers, cops, movie stars and just about any other part of LA demographics you could think of; once, Led Zeppelin pulled into the parking lot, with their entourage, in a small fleet of limousines, ordered a slew of Tommy Burgers, eating them in and around the limos. They are particularly famous for their chili, which they sell by the cup all the way to full quarts, and they sell a lot of the stuff...
