The greater number of states would involve a greater sized federal government to manage it. The fewer number of states could get by with a smaller federal government.

I wonder what the optimum number is?

I have often felt that we are evolving/devolving from being the United States of America to becoming the United Federation of America.

I am not sure that is necessarily a good or a bad thing.
What is optimal in a form of government? The question is divided depending on which part of the world the person lives. United Federation of America sounds good to me! As long as it can work in a way that benefits the citizen, that's fine, but that is not in reality, as we all know.
